Tour Plan
Fly from Lagos to Bauchi or travel by road (approx. 8 hrs). Check in to Wikki Tourist Camp and enjoy a welcome lunch under the shade of the camp's ancient mahogany trees. After a brief orientation by your lead ranger, embark on a two-hour afternoon game drive to coincide with wildlife's most active period before dusk. Spot herds of waterbuck and warthog at watering holes, scan the treetops for monkeys, and look for tracks of the park's elusive big game. Return to camp for a campfire dinner under a sky uncontested by light pollution.
Rise before dawn for the ultimate experience: an early-morning game drive into the Elephant Block — the area of the park known for its dense elephant activity. With patience and expert guidance, you may encounter breeding herds, bulls in musth, and elephants drinking at the seasonal pools. Return for a hearty bush breakfast before spending the mid-morning at Wikki Warm Springs for a swim in its legendary crystal-clear 31.5°C waters. The afternoon offers a guided bird-watching circuit with a species checklist; Yankari is exceptional for raptors, rollers, bee-eaters, and hornbills. Evening campfire ranger talk on elephant conservation.
Morning guided bush walk (2.5 km, easy pace) through riparian woodland — the ranger teaches tracking, identifies medicinal plants, and explains the ecosystem relationships between species. After lunch and a cool rest at camp, visit the Gaji River Hippo Pool where a resident pod of hippos has been monitored for decades. Hippo encounters at close range (from the vehicle, at safe distance) are almost guaranteed. After dinner, venture out on a night safari — spotlight-assisted game drive revealing bush babies, civets, genets, and nocturnal birds seldom seen by day.
One last sunrise game drive before checkout, heading to the southern wetland fringes where buffalo and crocodile are most frequently spotted. Return to camp for breakfast and checkout. Transfer to Bauchi Airport for your return flight to Lagos (or begin the road journey). Your ranger will present a personalised species list of everything recorded during your stay — a souvenir of Nigeria's remarkable wild heritage.
