About This Tour

Four days of authentic African wildlife adventure in Nigeria's premier national park — home to elephants, hippos, baboons, and over 350 bird species, plus natural warm springs.

Yankari National Park, sprawling across 2,244 km² of savanna woodland in Bauchi State, is Nigeria's crown jewel of wildlife conservation and one of West Africa's most important protected areas. This four-day safari puts you at the heart of the park's extraordinary ecosystem, guided by expert rangers who know every waterhole, every game trail, and every behaviour pattern of the resident wildlife.

Yankari is home to one of Nigeria's largest elephant populations — an estimated 350–450 individuals — as well as buffalo, waterbuck, bushbuck, warthog, crocodile, and a remarkable population of olive baboons whose complex social dynamics provide endlessly fascinating observation. Over 350 bird species have been recorded in the park, making it a paradise for ornithologists and wildlife photographers.

Beyond game drives, the tour includes a visit to Wikki Warm Springs — a natural pool fed by a 31.5°C spring that flows year-round, producing crystal-clear, bilharzia-free water ideal for swimming. The springs, lined by mahogany trees and inhabited by monitor lizards, are among the most beautiful natural features in northern Nigeria.

Accommodation is at the upgraded Wikki Tourist Camp, sensitively positioned within the park and offering comfortable en-suite chalets that bring guests as close to nature as possible. Evening campfires, ranger talks on conservation, and stargazing in Bauchi's unpolluted night sky make this a profoundly memorable experience.

Tour Plan

Arrival & Afternoon Game Drive

Fly from Lagos to Bauchi or travel by road (approx. 8 hrs). Check in to Wikki Tourist Camp and enjoy a welcome lunch under the shade of the camp's ancient mahogany trees. After a brief orientation by your lead ranger, embark on a two-hour afternoon game drive to coincide with wildlife's most active period before dusk. Spot herds of waterbuck and warthog at watering holes, scan the treetops for monkeys, and look for tracks of the park's elusive big game. Return to camp for a campfire dinner under a sky uncontested by light pollution.

Location: Yankari National Park (Western Zone)
Duration: 3 hours game drive
Meal Included: Lunch, Dinner

Elephant Country & Wikki Warm Springs

Rise before dawn for the ultimate experience: an early-morning game drive into the Elephant Block — the area of the park known for its dense elephant activity. With patience and expert guidance, you may encounter breeding herds, bulls in musth, and elephants drinking at the seasonal pools. Return for a hearty bush breakfast before spending the mid-morning at Wikki Warm Springs for a swim in its legendary crystal-clear 31.5°C waters. The afternoon offers a guided bird-watching circuit with a species checklist; Yankari is exceptional for raptors, rollers, bee-eaters, and hornbills. Evening campfire ranger talk on elephant conservation.

Location: Elephant Block & Wikki Springs, Yankari
Duration: Full day
Meal Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Bush Walk, Hippo Pool & Night Safari

Morning guided bush walk (2.5 km, easy pace) through riparian woodland — the ranger teaches tracking, identifies medicinal plants, and explains the ecosystem relationships between species. After lunch and a cool rest at camp, visit the Gaji River Hippo Pool where a resident pod of hippos has been monitored for decades. Hippo encounters at close range (from the vehicle, at safe distance) are almost guaranteed. After dinner, venture out on a night safari — spotlight-assisted game drive revealing bush babies, civets, genets, and nocturnal birds seldom seen by day.

Location: Yankari Bush Trails & Gaji River
Duration: Full day
Meal Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Final Morning Drive & Departure

One last sunrise game drive before checkout, heading to the southern wetland fringes where buffalo and crocodile are most frequently spotted. Return to camp for breakfast and checkout. Transfer to Bauchi Airport for your return flight to Lagos (or begin the road journey). Your ranger will present a personalised species list of everything recorded during your stay — a souvenir of Nigeria's remarkable wild heritage.
